"Compact Couple"

Interior Design Scenerio

Based on a design scenario generated from an FCCLA (Family Community and Career Leaders of America) Star Event project, this design features the use of environmental/sustainable design.

Tasked with remodeling a 25' x25' craftsman home, the goal of the design was to match function with comfort in a style that was both true to the roots of the home and the modern lifestyle of the client.

This design was presented at FCCLA Nevada State Conference and received a Gold Medal Award and qualification for National Conference.

Design Completed with feedback from student designer Jovana Tomic

Original Floorplan

Originally the floor plan lacked key features of a modern home that make it functional. For example, the original floor plan had no indicated space for an indoor laundry room. So in the new design, we included space for a stackable laundry right off of the master bedroom. Other changes made were simply the rearranging of the closet in the bedroom space, but other than that we tried our best to keep the bones of the home the same.

The next step was to develop the overall ambiance we wanted to give the space and we decided that a home should be a place that is calm, inviting, yet personalized. So for our color scheme, we chose calming neutrals like beige and cool toned greys with accents of blue and green. The neutrals will give the space the comfort and calm we were looking for and the accents reflect the interest in nature that was expressed. These colors are also sustainably sourced from a company known as green planet paints and they include no VOCs and are plant and mineral based.

For the backyard, we chose to create seating around a square table on an extended patio that transforms into a walkway which then leads to gardening space and a koi pond water feature. We also included planting space along the side of the home for more decorative planters which are made of wood from recycled pallets.

For the side yard, we chose to keep it simple and plan a curved walkway -which makes space more fluid and therefore more calming- and placed smaller shrubs in mulch which enhances plant health.

The porch is the last outdoor space and again we mainly wanted to make the space more inviting and treat is as a preview for the interior space. Therefore we have applied the same color scheme to the outdoor spaces. On the porch, we have included a swing chair on one side that will be upholstered in the tan fabric you see here which is from perennials outdoor line and we would include accent pillows in the striped blue fabric from the same outdoor line. And On the other side of the porch, we thought it would be fun to incorporate unique seating like these dual wooden lounge chairs.

Moving on to the interior space we decided to focus on the living room because we believe it is where the heart of the home is and where the most gathering is done. For flooring we chose a darker color to ground the space and the material is actually cork wood which is one of the most sustainable flooring choices as no trees are actually cut down to produce this product. And for the kitchen, bath, and laundry we included this grey ceramic tile. Now throughout the home is gorgeous traditional molding that we would simply repaint in the bright white.

Moving on now to furnishing we chose to mainly view manufacturers that either sell overstocked items or repurpose older pieces. So for our area rug, it is from Wayfair and corresponds with both our neutrals and accent colors. It is also labeled by Wayfair as environmentally friendly and comes with free shipping. The largest piece of furniture is the sofa. This was actually found on a website called mysistersattic which is essentially an online consignment store located in phoenix Arizona. And after purchasing this piece my team and I would have it sent out to a local company to have it reupholstered in the gorgeous grey polyester blend from Perennials.

Behind the couch is another piece from mysistersattic and it is an oak console table that contrasts beautifully with the floor and provides a place to unload things like keys or purses upon entering the house. Our other table in the space is this coffee table and to go with it, we have included these poufs that can be tucked under the table or pulled out and used as individual ottomans.
